BOOK PRESERVATION WORK

When the original team of five volunteers started work at the Balfour and Newton Libraries at the Department of Zoology in 2011 we had no idea what lay ahead.

There are now fifteen CANTAB members who are helping four college libraries to preserve their wonderful collections of rare books for future generations.

During the past seven years there have been diversions into archiving at the David Parr House and the Museum of Cambridge but at present our hearts are devoted entirely to books!

Here is an example of one of the many rare books volunteers discovered at Christ’s Old Library.  It is a volume of the Biblia polyglotta [Polyglot Bible], edited by Brian Walton (1600-1661) some time Bishop of Chester.  For its time, the book was a massive undertaking - it prints texts of the Bible in Hebrew, Chaldee, Samaritan, Syriac, Arabic, Persian, Ethiopic, Greek and Latin.
